Anyone who grew up with frizzy hair probably grew up as an outcast of their social group. Frizz doesn't make anyone look good, and it adds nothing to any style ever invented by the fashion powers that be. It has been the bane of every sufferer's existence and a daily challenge for anyone cursed with bad hair.
Lifelong frizzy hair victims would rather be subjected to untold diseases - they can be cured with medicine, potions, or time. Frizz ? Even science can't figure out how to tame it, never mind find a cure. Since real frizz is something you are born with, it can only be cured at the genetic level. Frizz is a genetic defect just like being predisposed to cancer - however, until frizz becomes a life threatening malady, science won't be looking for grant money to do much about researching its causes and solutions.
And there was little you could do about. Kids back then didn't carry around curling irons or straightening irons or anything else that might help a little - they hadn't been invented. Their only recourse was maybe some more heavy duty hair spray and - hope no one sees you for the rest of the day.
For the truly desperate - which was pretty much everyone with frizz - straightening products came out that usually caused more damage than the process was worth and chunks of hair would come out and pieces would break off. Even after all that, what was left wasn't even straight.
There is no way to keep frizz straight, even with the lye laden products available for use, and any beneficial effects are short lived by a short dose of humidity or a few drops of water.
A new process referred to as keratinizing has shown some promise, however. Instead of the old theory of using lye and other harsh damaging chemicals to break down the cuticle on the outside of the hair, this process softens the cuticle of the hair to the point that it relaxes all by itself. Keratin is a natural occurring substance already found in hair, nails and skin coloring and is easily handled by the body, and accepted.
Very few products on the market really help. No shampoo is going to cut down on the frizz, and no conditioner is going to show a difference. "Smoothing" lotions don't do anything. The only realistic hope is to use some super hold gel and hair spray and use it like cement - put on enough, and your hair will be forced to stay in place.
For those who can't seem to come up with the $250+ price for this process, you can still rely on hard hold hair spray and gels that literally freeze your hair into position. If all else fails, grow your hair long enough to pull back into a pony tail and drench it with a super holding gel.
