Acid Reflux is also called Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is the place where food or liquid comes to esophagus from stomach. And this causes pain and heartburn.
Apart from pain in the chest or heartburn other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, sore throat, burping, cough, wheezing, difficulty swallowing, sore throat, hoarse voice and in severe cases, vomiting blood, difficulty breathing and choking.
The opening and closing of the esophagus is done by lower esophageal sphincter muscles. It maintains a pressure barrier against the stomach when working correctly.
Sometimes these muscles either aren't working properly due to congenital defects or certain traumas such as hiatal hernia. Although body posture, health and certain foods can trigger reflux on their own, having a preexisting LED muscle condition can be exacerbated by what one eats or drinks.
Caffeine, chocolate, onions, tomatoes and citrus are the foods that advised to be avoided even though it is not proved in latest researches.
But the real food that you have to avoid is foods that are high in fat content and foods that are greasy. Still, if you are willing to eat these foods make sure you limit yourself to one meal a day.
It is always advised to drink a full glass of water while taking a tablet. The following positions and habits will trigger acid reflux. They are avoid lying in an incline position after eating, elevating the head while sleeping, avoiding alcohol and tobacco.
Bread, rice and pasta the items which are rich in carbohydrates are advised for acid reflux. These foods will absorb the acid in stomach very easily.
Eating in small quantities is always better. When we tend to eat more food the stomach decides to produce more stomach acid to digest. Therefore, when the drink or food comes back to esophagus it will be dipped in stomach acid.
Treatment for GERD can include over the counter heartburn medications and prescription medications but one should be careful as many of these drugs have serious side effects and do not interact well with one another.
In some serious cases surgeries are also done. But it will not give you any guarantee that it will not come back.
Maintaining a healthy weight is one key way to help avoid acid reflux. People suffering from obesity have an increased abdominal pressure which can trigger reflux.
Even people who go ga ga about their weight carry a greater risk than people people who are overweight in a consistent manner. Even by gaining a little amount of weight one can trigger acid reflux, this has been proved in a recent research.
